Email Marketing Mistakes

July 21, 2009 By: admin Category: Internet Marketing

Email marketing can be very effective for promoting your business. It is a tricky area though and it is easy to make common email marketing mistakes if you don’t know the right methods to use. This can be frustrating for you as it will cost you money yet not generate any additional sells. Here are some
common email marketing mistakes and pitfalls you need to be aware of. It will make your marketing strategies more effective.

Consumers what to feel like they are a person to your business, not just a statistic. Take the time to address each email personally. It is more expensive, but it is more effective. You will get a much better response then something addressed to ‘Dear Customer”. Don’t use dollar signs in your email marketing campaign. It is turn off to consumers who view it as you only want their money. Don’t use email marketing during the holidays.
Customers are flooded with them and yours won’t stand out. People are too busy and stressed to relax and read email that is not personal or important at this time of year. If you want to market for the holidays then you need to do it early at least before Thanksgiving.

Consumers don’t have a lot of patience! Your email message needs to jump out at them the moment they open it. Put the most enticing information first with the other details further down. They are more likely to read the entire email message if you get their attention from the start. As each consumer is different, so is their computer set up and the type of program they use.
Don’t assume the email will open up the same in every type of email service. You will need to test it out for each popular email service. Always give the consumer the option of opening the email in either html or plain text.

Confidentiality is very important to consumers. Make sure your email sign up clearly states that you will not sell their information and that it will be kept confidential and secure. You will be surprised how many people won’t sign up for your email promotions if you don’t offer this bit of information.
There are rules and regulations out there regarding what you can and can’t do when it comes to email marketing. Make sure you are familiar with those laws. They vary by country so if you do global marketing make sure you check the regulations for each area you will be sending them to. Failure to do so can lead to huge fines for your business.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking you know what your consumers want. If you really want to know what they are after then take the time to ask. Be open to their comments, questions, suggestions, and concerns. Letting them know you are available for such customer service is a great way to earn their loyalty. It is easy to sell something to a consumer but much harder to please them so they will come back again and again.

If you are new to email marketing, consult with a professional. This will make the entire process flow easier for you as well as yield better results. Take the time to research the consultant before using them. As for references and talk about what your goals are. If the consultant is not willing to make your goals a priority then don’t work with them. Are you afraid to spend a large amount of your revenue on marketing? Consider working with
a broker consultant. This means you only pay them for the actual positive results the marketing brings you. They will be paid based on the traffic they generate for your site or the amount of new sales resulting from the email marketing. Make sure what ever method you choose is clear to both parties and in writing. Make sure the time frame that they will receive benefits for is
clear as well.

You don’t want unhappy subscribers to your email marketing campaigns. The laws require you to offer a link where customers can unsubscribe. While you want to do all you can to keep them reading your emails, it is important to respect their wishes and remove them from the mailing list immediately. They will become very frustrated if they continue to receive them once they have asked to be removed. It can cost you their future business. Email marketing can be effective for your business if you keep these common mistakes from becoming part of your marketing plan.

Search Engine Spiders

July 10, 2009 By: admin Category: Internet Marketing

What Spiders Do…

Search engine spiders are by far one of the most useful things to come around in the last 10 years of the internet. They are useful not only to the web sites (Google and many others) that use them, but also to people who are searching for a particular site and those who run web sites. Spiders allow your site to be seen by the millions of people who use search engines every day.

What are spiders and what purpose do they serve?

Spiders are essentially programs that “crawl” sites and report back to their superior (Google or whatever search engine they were created for) what their findings are. Their purpose is to make it easy for sites to get listed in search engines.

You might be wondering, what does it mean to “crawl” a site?
Well it means to visit and site and copy the information.

How do spiders work?

Spiders work by finding links to web sites, visiting those web sites, going through the content of a web site and then reporting the content of the site back to the database of the site which they are working for. Google spiders, thus, crawl sites and report the information back to Google’s database. From there, the information is added to Google’s search engine, and the site then shows up in Google search results. Much the same process happens with any other search engine spider.

How can I keep spiders from visiting my site?

You might be thinking, “why would I want to keep such a useful thing from visiting my site?” Well, the short answer is, sometimes site owners don’t want the spider to crawl on a particular part of their site. Some site owners don’t want spiders to crawl their site at all. The reasons for not wanting a spider to crawl a site or a particular part of a site vary, although most of the time it is because the site is either completely spam or features a page or two of spam.

If you’re one of those site owners, then you’ll want to create and upload something called a robots.txt file. We will briefly go over how to do this.

A robots.txt file
The whole purpose of a robots.txt file is to tell a search engine spider not to crawl the site or part of the site on which the robots.txt file resides.

Creating the file
Creating a robots.txt file that blocks out spiders is easy.
First, open up notepad. Then, copy and paste the following:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

Once you’ve done that, save the file as “robots” and as a .txt file.

Uploading the file
Next, you will upload the file to the part of your site which
you do not want the spider to visit. So, if you don’t want them to visit yoursite.com/news/, you’ll upload robots.txt to the news folder. If you don’t want the search engine spider to visit your site as well, upload robots.txt to your index folder. That’s all there is to it.

Using the robots.txt file to make sure search engine spiders DO visit your site

Believe it or not, the robots.txt file can be used to both
disallow and allow search engine spiders to crawl your site.
Here’s how to create and upload such a file.

Creating the file
Open up notepad and copy and paste in the following:

User-agent: *
Disallow:

You’ll notice that the only difference between this and the
earlier example is that Disallow: is not followed with /. If it
were, that would tell spiders to go away. Once again, save the file as robots.txt.

Uploading the file
All you’ll do is upload the robots.txt file to the part of your site that you want the robot to pay a visit to. So if you want the robot to see the whole site, just put the robots.txt file right alongside the index file. And you’re done.

Writing Content For Search Engines

July 10, 2009 By: admin Category: Internet Marketing

Content That Search Engines Love…

One of the most important steps to take to ensure that your site is successful is to have a site that is well-loved by search engines. This is actually fairly easy to do—but also fairly easy not to do. It is a known fact that well-placed keywords and keyword phrases on a piece of content will attract search engine spiders. It is also a well-known fact that keyword stuffing—using keywords way too much—will repel spiders and stop them from putting your site on a search engine.

So what is the delicate balance of having just the right amount of keywords and keyword phrases? How do you achieve it? How do you make sure you aren’t overusing keywords? In this newsletter, we will go over all of the above to help make your site keyword optimized.

How do I write content that the search engines love?

The easy answer is to make sure your content has several keywords. But how is this done in a natural way so not as to hurt your traffic from actual human beings? Well, it all comes down to naturally putting keywords into your content. We’ll briefly go over this process.

1) Sit down and decide what your content will be about.

If your site is all about sports, figure out what kinds of sports content you’ll put on there. Maybe you’ll write about basketball or golf or football or any other sport. Or if you’re running a music site, you could write content about a particular style of music or band/artist. The point is, make sure that whatever content you write is relevant to your site.

2) Make a list of keywords that are relevant to your content

So if you’re writing a music article, these keywords could be:

Rock, Pop, Country, Rap, R&B, Hip Hop, Guitar

But try to narrow your list down to 2 or 3 keywords. The first keyword should be a primary keyword(used at least 10 times in a 500 word document) and the other one or two should be secondary keywords(used a few times each in a 500 word document).

3) Begin writing the content.

As you write each sentence, try to think about where the primary and secondary keywords might fit in. Wherever it seems natural, use the keywords. However, you should never try to make them fit where they don’t fit. If it looks unnatural, don’t use them.

4) Read over the content.

When you read over the content, try to read it like a visitor would. Do the keywords you’ve tried to incorporate in the text distract you from the meaning of the content? Do the keywords seem blatant?  If they do, rewrite the content to make it flow more naturally.

5) Count the number of keywords and plain words

If you have a 500 word piece of content, you’ll want to see around 5-15 primary keywords sprinkled throughout the content—a keyword density of at least 1%, but ideally 3%. Keyword density is the number of keywords divided by the total number of words. A keyword density of 1% in a 500 word piece of content would be 5 keywords, while a keyword density of 3% in a 500 word piece of content would be 15 keywords. Strive for 3%.

6) If you don’t have enough keyword density, or have too much, rewrite the content.

Rewrite your content as necessary to have enough keyword density.

Why is keyword “stuffing” bad for my site?

It is bad for your site simply because search engine spiders have been programmed to skip over sites with excessive keywords. These would be sites with keyword densities of at least 10%. Sites like these are known as spam sites—sites created specifically to earn high rankings in a search engine due to high keyword usage. Before, spam sites would be heavily ranked in a search engine, but not anymore. Spiders are smarter than ever, able to detect spam sites from a mile away.

That’s why keyword stuffing is a bad thing for your site—it will actually keep spiders from visiting. Make sure you do not have a keyword density of much more than 5%. Even 5% is considered too high.

Keeping the above things in mind will help you to build a site that search engine spiders love.

Article Keywords

July 07, 2009 By: admin Category: Internet Marketing

Keywords or phrases are tools used in internet marketing to achieve better rankings in search engines. At a certain point in time, webmasters abused this system by saturating the content of their websites with keywords to be able to achieve a high ranking. However, this resulted in search engine users getting results that had no relevance whatsoever to their query.

To combat this abuse, search engine webmasters developed algorithms to decipher which websites have relevant content and which websites did not. Now, the whole focus for keyword utilization has shifted to content rich articles with a keyword ratio average of about 12% of the whole article.

The whole reason for this shift in keyword utilization stems from the fact that search engine sites track and record the abuse of keywords. If you happen to have an article of 500 words containing nothing but the word “porn”, chances are your site will be banned from the search engine.

This shift has also created a whole new industry in writing. You will definitely be able to get a few odd jobs writing search engine optimized (SEO) articles.

The key to writing good SEO articles is to be true to the subject at hand. Make sure that your SEO article contains relevant information and a substantial proportion of keyword scattered throughout the article. Include a keyword or phrase in the title of your article. Include a minimum of 2 keywords or phrases in the beginning and ending paragraphs of your article. Finally, scatter keywords in the body of your article. If you have a 500 word article, a minimum of 1 keyword or phrase per paragraph in the text body is recommended.

Write your article for your product, not for the sake of keywords. As you go on with your article, you will be using your keywords when you describe your product and when you give out instructions on how to use the product. Write about how the product came into existence and how it has developed through the years. Cite instances where the product has been particularly useful to you or to an acquaintance.

When writing the article, do not force the keyword issue. Your articles must be forthright, literate, easy and entertaining to read. Some writers sacrifice grammar for the sake of a keyword placement. Don’t do that. When searchers are directed to an article of yours and it happens to contain spelling errors, wrong grammar and a generally sloppy composition, they might decide to look for another article or website that contains more nicely written content.

If you are unable to compose your own article because of time constraints, you can use freelance websites to hire article writers who will do the job for you. Prices for an original SEO article containing 500 to 750 words max range anywhere from $1 to 15$.

Just be sure to communicate well with the writers so that they fully understand what you require. Ask for previous work samples so you can judge whether their skills are up to your standards. If you come across a writer offering his service rather cheaply, don’t rush in and call yourself lucky. The best way to be sure that you have found a cheap but quality conscious worker is to ask him to provide one article to you. In exchange you will pay him for that one article and use it as criteria for judging his qualifications. Try writing an article yourself before hiring it out to someone else. You of all people should know how the article must read.

Keyword Relevance

July 07, 2009 By: admin Category: Internet Marketing

The function of keywords is to attract the search engine’s attention. Once attracted, the search engine lists the site that contains the keyword. This system opened up avenues for search engine abuse by web masters. Because of a search engine’s heavy dependence on keywords, anybody could write “sex, xxx, porn” and other strong keywords even though the website contains nothing of the sort. As a result of this abuse, the reputations of search engines all over the web begun to suffer. Surfers got re-directed to websites that had no relevance to their query.

To stop the abuse and enhance their accuracy and reputation, search engines devised an algorithm method where web crawlers not only looked at the keywords, but also at the contents that goes along with them. With this new method of indexing, web masters and internet marketers were finally forced to perform honest work. They stopped using words like “sex, xxx” and porn” where there was none and begun writing relevant articles that give accurate descriptions of their website or products.

As a result of this new indexing system, the industry of search engine optimization (SEO) article writing was born. SEO article writers are required to write meaningful articles that thoroughly describe the product or website. Aside from using correct and appropriate writing methods, they also have to reserve slots within the article for the seeding of keywords.

As far as search engines are concerned, they index your website by scanning the top of your website first. Be sure to have descriptive literature of about 250++ words as this is what the search engines look for. Within that 250++ word article, embed your keywords in it without breaking the smooth flow of the article. Try to avoid grammar deficiencies because of keyword seeding. Your article needs to be as correct as it can be for the search engine to understand what your website is saying and what relevance it has to a searcher’s query.

You can try the old method but you will not get as good results as you will with the honest way. Furthermore, attempting to mislead a search engine can lead to a bottom placement in search rankings. Aside from being given low priority in searches, search engines also have the option of removing your website from their index. If this unfortunate development happens to your website, you’ve already lost your business.

The internet is evolving. Just as it took centuries for the laws of the United States to reach maturity, the internet is hurrying along at light-speeds to protect everyone who decides to visit it. If you try to disrupt the flow of one of its economies, various individuals and corporations that own a stake in the internet will immediately smother you and the tools you use for disturbing a relatively peaceful environment.

As honesty seems to be the best policy for now, SEO article writing is the way to go. Do not compromise your articles for the sake of keyword density. After all, when your customers get to your website and read a poorly written article, your esteem in their eyes will immediately plummet. It wouldn’t be a surprise if they decide to transfer to another website with better services and a higher degree of usefulness and accuracy.

How To Implement An Effective Email Marketing Campaign

July 06, 2009 By: admin Category: Internet Marketing

Effective Email Marketing Campaigns

Are you interested in using email marketing to enhance the traffic and sales of your website? It can be a confusing process if you don’t know where to start. You will need to establish your goals before you send the first email. What are you hoping to accomplish? Make sure these goals are clear and realistic. This will help you measure the success of the email marketing campaign. This is a great way to learn what works and what doesn’t for future email marketing campaigns. While your particular goals will vary, some common ones include increasing sales, getting more traffic to the website; improve awareness of about your company and what products or services you offer, and building a solid relationship with your customers.

As you start measuring the success of your email marketing campaign, make sure you are comparing the data only against your own information not that of the industry. For example did your sales increase by 10% and traffic to your site increase by 25% after your email marketing campaign rather than discovering the rate that sales and traffic increased for the entire industry you are in.

Don’t be discouraged if your first email marketing campaign doesn’t do as well as you hoped, especially if you are a new business. It takes time to build trust with consumers. Make sure you use your original email address when you send out the emails. This will help it get past the spam filters.

Make sure you take the time to update your email listings. Remove any requests to opt out quickly and efficiently to respect the consumer’s privacy. You will be wasting your time to email to incorrect addresses or those who don’t want your materials. Never change the first part of a person’s email address even if the mail is undeliverable. However it is a good idea to look for misspellings in the email service provider name such as Yahoo being Yaho or Hotmail being Hotmall.

Some businesses like to use an email marketing template. Don’t get too comfortable with a successful marketing campaign though! This is because customers become bored easily with the same format. You need to keep their interest by mixing things up a bit in future email marketing campaigns. Opt in email marketing software collects email addresses from your website. This is a great method that is simple for getting you a data base started. As your data base grows you can choose to send your future email marketing campaigns to everyone on the list or just a select target group based on their purchasing history.

You will need to design your email marketing campaign very well. It needs to be attractive to hold the attention of the consumer long enough for them to decide it is worth reading. You don’t want your efforts to be mistaken for common spam or junk mail right? Make sure all the content is spelled correctly. Keep the text short and to the point. Readers who open your email may choose to delete it or save it to read later if it looks to lengthy. You want them to open it, be captivated, and read it. The first sentences need to identify your company and what you are offering. Place the important information first. Then reader is likely to keep reading. Give them a sense of urgency for responding by clearing stating the day the promotional offers expire.

Email marketing is an effective tool if you take the time to use it properly. It is anticipated to be the most used method of advertising on the internet by 2008. While this means you will have lots of opportunity to market your business, it also means there is going to be a great deal of competition trying to get consumers to look at their business. You will have to be creative and work hard to develop effective email marketing campaigns that are attractive, informative, and encourage the consumer to take action.

Why Video Demos Work!

July 02, 2009 By: admin Category: Internet Marketing

Let’s face it. The internet is a very convenient shopping establishment. You don’t need to lose time getting to a store and you don’t lose money for paying cab fare or gasoline. The only thing that I lose is money when my wife goes on an inspired shopping binge. As a result of this convenience, more and more people are regularly logging onto the internet to shop. Manufacturers, distributors, independent shops, importers and exporters realize the strong earning potential by being online. The internet has its own economy and the potential to earn money is incalculable.

For this reason, marketing firms and advertising agencies joined the bandwagon with frenzy. You have this newsletter as a result of this new economic development. Every year, different strategies are being formulated, developed, tested and applied to better and improve existing advertising and marketing methods.

At the start, most advertisements were in the form of combination text and picture messages. Pop-up windows were developed to open new browsers windows where products and ideas could be advertised. This improved to animated pictures with text and finally to full streaming video with audio.

The pop-up text and picture window was a success; but not as much as advertisers and marketing specialists hoped it would be. For one thing, people soon grew tired of these pop-ups that, as soon as they appeared, they were immediately closed. You wouldn’t stare at a billboard you see everyday, right? To further add to the loss of advertising opportunities, anti-virus software and other protection software utilities were created to
prevent pop-up messages from appearing. Mozilla developed the Firefox internet browser which has a built-in feature that immediately blocks pop-up windows from being opened. Pop-up windows became, and still is, an annoyance much like marketing and advertising spam messages.

During this period in internet history, advertising through television still had no significant rival until internet video streaming was created. Let us analyze why videos are a more effective means of communicating.

The immediate and main concern of advertisers is to grab the interest of the consumer. When a new billboard is put up, you might stare at it for a couple of weeks before it becomes a common sight that you begin to ignore it. The same principle applies for pop-up windows. Pop-up windows are fun in the beginning because of their novel nature. Wow! I get to see all these special and discounted offers for different merchandise. After a while, however, it becomes an annoyance every time it interrupts your browsing. Also, staring at a picture will not turn it into a frog prince. You can only stare at an inanimate object for so long before you get bored. When boredom sets in because of monotony or constant repetition, the advertisers fail their jobs.

This is why advertising through television and internet video streaming is a most effective tool. The ability of a moving or animated picture to capture attention knows no bounds. Just look at people stopping in front of shops that sell TV sets to watch the videos being played. Advertisers know that a moving, talking and colorful video is an easy way to grab a person’s attention. In the internet, video streaming replaces television commercials
as the number one method for marketing and advertising.

For businesses that require movies or trailers as a method of demonstrating their product, internet video streaming comes in very handy. Watching a moving picture that demonstrates how to assemble your child’s plastic swing is simply better than reading a manual.

Websites that offer online cooking classes will find video streaming a very helpful tool in demonstrating cooking methods and technique. A mechanic giving instruction on how to change your car’s fuel, oil and air filters is certainly a better option than reading a manual. Internet video streaming is a definite advantage to entrepreneurs who want their customers to understand the merchandise they are selling. If your customer understands how to use and knows about every detail of the product you’re selling, chances are he will trust your product and choose to buy your brand over anyone else’s.

Video in eCommerce

July 01, 2009 By: admin Category: Internet Marketing

The most common misconception people have for internet audio and video applications are with their usage. More often, video with audio, or one of these alone, are viewed as materials for entertainment or leisure in the internet. This misconception is beginning to fade fast.

The most obvious reason is the way audio and video are used as teasers to wet the appetites of prospective customers. The best examples of all websites that use this method are the shopping websites. These websites that sell hot selling products will design their web pages in such a way that highlights of a whole movie are embedded within the web page. In this manner, they hope to persuade the browsing public, who view the partial material, to purchase the product. In simpler terms, a viewable movie trailer is added to the site.

For commercial vendor websites that primarily sell movies and music, video and audio utilities are an integral part of their marketing strategy. They understand that most people want to see and/or hear what they are buying. They know that using video and audio to show their merchandise to customers wins half the battle for them to get the customers to buy.

For websites that are focused on selling published materials like books and audio books, a few narrated passages or several sample chapters of the material encoded in audio files is a good way to encourage a customer to buy their product.

Furthermore, testimonials of previous customers have a better chance of being noticed than those that are just encoded in text. Most people usually go to a website for a specific reason. For example, one person wants to buy an independent video but he/she does not know which independent video vendor website to go to. This person will use a search engine to find what he/she needs. Once found, that person will go directly to the part of the website where the video he/she is looking for exists.

In cases like these, the home or welcome page is bypassed where, most likely, all of the testimonials are situated. With audio and/or video applications installed in the web site, the testimonials can be streamed to the customer automatically to whichever part of the website he/she is in. Of course, using audio/video streaming now to project your testimonials is a bit extreme at the moment. However, future technology will make audio/video streaming a material of lesser bulk in terms of data transfer. There will come a time when the whole internet can be browsed by vocal commands.

To get back to the subject at hand, the ability of being able to project your merchandise, testimonials, and other points you want your customers to be aware of, by using audio/video technology is limitless and powerful. A single video clip lasting around 10 seconds is no longer considered a huge burden as far as electronic data storage is concerned.

What can you, as an entrepreneur, place into a 10 seconds long video so that you can gain your customers’ trust or make them aware of your other merchandise? Now, 10 seconds is a relatively short time, but it is plenty enough time for people to convey several points of view. If a 10 second video is worth more that a lot of text writings, what more a video that is 20 or 30 seconds long?

Internet audio and video streaming technology is getting more and more sophisticated. All you have to do is look around you and you will see people watching videos and listening to music with their I-pods, MP3 and MP4 players. Incidentally, the best sources for their audio and video needs can be found on the internet. So, imagine all the audio/video data streaming, downloading and uploading around in the internet, and you will have a good idea of just how measly a 10 second video is in terms of today’s technology.

The use of audio/video streaming on the internet is a powerful marketing tool. However, the technology for it has matured enough in that audio and video files use more space from storage devices such as hard drives and I-pods. Already, hard drives of computers have transcended the megabyte barrier and are now storing gigabytes of data.
